I have been rafting no less than a dozen times in my life but this trip topped them all.
The weekend began Friday night when JT, Booker, The Pelf and I arrived at Drue's cabin in Blue Ridge. Pelf had surprised us with a gift; a bb gun that he had just purchased for the trip. Of course Mother Goose (Don) was indulging in the typical Budweisers and Marlboro's starting upon arrival at 4 that afternoon. Mothergoose, Muff, Mumbles (Chad) and Drue were already there as we arrived and Kyle, Tabetha, and Blake in just behind us. This was already starting to look like a promising crowd. We break into the Milwaukees Best Light (which was $12.71 for a 30 pack at the Bi Lo in Elijay) to get the night started. Beer pong, shooting the bb gun, telling stories about carrollton and our college days and catching up were the core activities. McNeal and Holli arrive a little later as we are good and buzzed.
Drue's Cabin is bad ass by the way. It has a huge screened in porch on the middle level and outside the master on the top floor is another open porch; both with gorgeous views.
The only thing worth noting from this drunken night was Mothergoose's fight with the hill on the backside of the house. We were all out back, drinking and playing beer pong. JT and I were were playing Don and Blake (probably wooping their ass...). Well, you know the rule that states if the team that just threw ends up getting the ball back due to it bouncing back their way.... well, this was what got Mothergoose in trouble. After he shoots the ball it bounces to his right and my left going towards Tabetha and under her chair. Right behind her was a retaining wall with a drop off and a steep sloping hill down. The ball stops right behind her chair, Don tries to grab it but is moving way too fast. He falls off the wall, rolls down a short hill, gets slowed down by a tree but continues down another 6 feet. His white polo shirt came up splotched with greens, browns, reds, and a few colors mixed in. Somehow he held on to his cigarette and managed not even to break it. Needless to say, everyone was dying laughing at what they just witnessed. It was hilarious, I wish I had a video camera at that particular moment.
The next morning we woke up pretty early and Drue cooked us a big breakfast of sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy. It have to give Drue props, it was good and I had no idea he knew how to cook. We headed out to Whitewater Express at around 10:45. Of course we waited around at the place after picking out lifejackets, helmets, and paddles. Then we hopped on the bus and headed to the river. Drue, Clint, Pelf, Mumbles, JT and I were on one raft and everyone else was on the other raft. Cole was our guide; he was bad ass. He quickly figured out that we were ready to fuck shit up on this river.
The best part of the ride down the lower Ocoee was the very last rapid we came to. I can't remember the name though... As we come upon it Cole asks us if we want to make it really fun. Of couse we were all down to make it the best trip possible but the way he asked made us all wonder what he had in mind. He tells us that it is really fun to flip the boat. Yes, flip the boat! Now, most of the boat had been tossed multiple times (JT was tossed 4 times) from the boat and returned with battle scars from the rocks below. Also, trying to swim and get oxygen is tough in the rapids as it continuously tosses you under. Hesitantly, we all agree that this flipping the boat is a kick ass idea regardless of any potential harm done to our body or fear of drowning. We all load up in the back of the boat. The front of the boat is so high in the air we can barely see what is in front of us. Cole tells us that after we flip we need to swim right to avoid getting stuck in the next rapid as it is very dangerous. He also says to try and hold on to your paddle if possible. We head towards the rapids swiftly. The boat hits a huge rapid and the front of the boat seems to go straight up in the air, but then it drops. For a second I was dissapointed. 'It didn't flip' I thought to myself angrily! The boat quickly dropped down and came up the next rapid. The boat literally rocketed up the next rapid like a horse throwing a rider off his back. Within .3 seconds we were all underwater. I couldn't tell which way was up. I was holding on to a paddle and quickly realized I needed oxygen and holding this paddle was not helping me. I frantically started at what I thought was the top of the water and my head hit the raft. I reached up, pushed the raft out of the way and ended up inside the upside down raft. I swam under and realized I was moving quickly toward the left rapid (where Cole told us NOT to go). I could see everyone in front of me swimming to the right. I quickly swam, fearing for my life and made it to the right side. More rapids tossed us all under and shot us out to some smooth water. WHAT A RUSH! We thanked Cole for the awesome trip and he acknowledged that we were an awesome group for him to be able to take out.
Half of us stopped for Mexican on the way back, stopped to get more Milwaukees Best Light and proceeded back to Drue's. We were exhausted but quickly started drinking to begin the night. Beerpong, baseball, and four corners were the games of choice. Since we bought enough food to feed 50 people we fired up the grill around 10:30 and cooked hamburgers and hotdogs. Between being exhausted and full the night ended quickly and everyone was asleep by midnight. Other than Pelfrey's stories, the night was rather uneventful, but fun no doubt.
For next time:
- We need to do the upper and the lower. The lower itself is too short of a trip.
- We need to request Cole at Whitewater Express.
